Society events

Londonforum member societies are planning some fascinating talks and other events this autumn, open to members of other societies, and often of much more than local interest.

WHY, HOW AND WHAT WE CONSERVE
On Thursday 30 October at 8 Jon Finney will be giving the Finchley Society's Jean Scott Memorial Lecture. The title is 'Why, how and what we conserve: philosophy and practice in the local context'. This will be in the Drawing Room at Avenue House, East End Road, Finchley N3 3QE. There is a charge of £2 if you are not a member of the Finchley Society.

ROAD TRANSPORT BEFORE THE RAILWAYS
On Thursday 6 November at 7.30 Dorian Gerhold will give an illustrated talk on the stage coaches and carriers which provided transport on land before the railways were built. Dorian's books include Carriers and coachmasters on London from the 1650s to the 1760s and (jointly with Theo Barker) The rise and rise of road transport, 1700-1990. This is a Battersea Society event at St Mary's Church, Battersea Church Road SW11 3NA. There is a charge of £3.

FRANK MATCHAM, THEATRE ARCHITECT
On Thursday 20 November at 7.30 for 7.45 Mary Greenslade will be talking about the theatre architect 'Matchless Matcham'. Frank Matcham designed over 150 British theatres, including the Coliseum, the Palladium and the Richmond Theatre. This is a Richmond Society event at the Vestry Hall, 21 Paradise Road, Richmond TW9 1SA. Non-members are asked to make a donation of £1.
